A Practical 4-20 mA Loop Check
1. Identify the required test mode
Use measure mode when checking the current already flowing in a loop. Use source mode when the calibrator must generate a controlled mA signal, or simulate mode when testing a powered loop that expects a two-wire transmitter response. The correct connection and mode must be selected before energizing the test setup.
2. Apply known signal points
Common checks use 4 mA, 12 mA, and 20 mA to represent the lower point, midpoint, and upper point of a standard process signal. The 707 also supports percentage-based stepping and fine output adjustment, helping technicians compare the applied signal with the reading shown by the DCS, PLC, indicator, or final control element.
3. Record the loop response
A useful calibration record includes the applied value, received value, error, tolerance, device tag, date, and test conditions. The calibrator supplies the reference signal, while the site procedure determines acceptance limits and whether adjustment is required.
