PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Planning a Controlled High-Current Motor Start with the Schneider ATS48C59Q Altistart 48 Soft Starter

Schneider ATS48C59Q is a 560 A Altistart 48 soft starter for three-phase asynchronous motors on 230 to 415 V networks. Its purpose is not simply to reduce starting current: a correctly engineered installation can also limit mechanical shock, manage acceleration and deceleration, supervise motor loading and coordinate the transition to a bypass contactor.

Start with the motor and load, not with the current rating alone

The 560 A rating identifies an important part of the Schneider ATS48C59Q selection, but final suitability depends on motor nameplate current, service duty, starts per hour, acceleration time, ambient temperature, enclosure ventilation and the torque characteristic of the driven machine. Pumps, fans, conveyors and high-inertia loads place different demands on current limiting and torque control. The expected operating profile should therefore be documented before parameters are entered.

How the control sequence should be organized

A practical Schneider ATS48C59Q control scheme defines the start command, stop command, fault reset, bypass contactor logic and emergency-stop behavior before energization. The Altistart 48 platform supports two-wire or three-wire control. Whichever method is chosen, the wiring diagram should show how the starter, line contactor, bypass contactor and upstream protection interact during normal running and after a trip.

Set the initial current limit and acceleration time conservatively, then observe actual motor current and load response. Excessively short acceleration can cause nuisance trips or mechanical stress, while an unnecessarily long ramp increases heating. Pump applications may benefit from controlled deceleration to reduce hydraulic shock; conveyor applications often need a smooth but decisive torque build-up.

Retrofit decisions for an installed Altistart 48

When Schneider ATS48C59Q is being sourced for an existing cabinet, compare the full reference, supply voltage, motor data, physical dimensions, terminal layout, bypass arrangement and communication requirements with the installed unit. Photographs are helpful, but they do not replace the nameplate and approved schematic. Because the ATS48 range has reached end of commercialization, availability, repair strategy and migration timing should be considered together.

A replacement with the newer ATS480 family may require changes to wiring, parameters, communications or cabinet layout. Preserve the original ATS48C59Q parameter record and fault history before removal. A documented start test under normal load, followed by confirmation of bypass operation, motor current balance and thermal protection, provides a sound handover for maintenance teams.
